Bamboo Flooring Wood

For a beautiful and durable floor covering, explore the bamboo flooring wood products such as those available at www.floorchamp.com. These engineered wood products are not truly wood in the strict sense of the word. Although bamboo is often referred to as a bamboo tree, it is actually a type of jointed grass. Under proper conditions, the bamboo plant will grow twenty feet in a single season.

The bamboo flooring wood products which have been developed from the bamboo plant are a real breakthrough for the building products industry, but particularly in the area of floor coverings. For people who love the look and feel of a wood floor, yet are uncomfortable with using the dwindling supply of available hardwood , bamboo flooring wood is a wonderful alternative.

Bamboo flooring is manufactured from the split canes of bamboo that are at least three years old. Prior to this length of time, the plant suffers if the canes are cut, because the canes are needed to provide the nourishment which the plant needs to flourish. Older canes need to be removed from the plant, and it is these that are used in the production of bamboo flooring.

Split bamboo canes are first soaked in water to remove the starch, then flattened and dried. They are bonded together with a urea based adhesive under heat and pressure. Experiments using other types of adhesive or bonding agents have been less than successful but are continuing. Other tests have substituted other materials such as rubber tree wood and recycled rubber tires for the core bamboo layers, with good results. The product is shaped, milled and sanded, then cut into standard lengths and widths for further refinement, or for installation as solid wood floors.

Contractors and do-it-yourselfers appreciate the ease and practicality of installation. The cost of the flooring is consistent with other hardwood flooring products, and the hardness of the bamboo flooring is somewhat better than that of red oak. An entire room can easily be completed in a few hours assuming proper advance preparation has been completed.

Bamboo flooring works well as a solid floor, or as a floating floor. You should take into consideration the probability of moisture on the under-floor or concrete slab before selection the type of installation which would work best in your location. Bamboo is quite resistant to distortion due to humidity and temperature in either direction.

Prefinished flooring boards are available in two major colors. There is the light natural bamboo color which shows the pattern of the bamboo joints as a darkened area along the vertical grain. There is also the amber colored bamboo which is created by steaming the bamboo strips, creating carbonization.

The finished laminated flooring manifests as lighter and darker strips of bamboo, mottled by the darker colorization at the joints. It is visually appealing without being fussy.

The growth of popularity of this product simply on the basis of look and handling ease is remarkable. The import companies handling the product have grown from two only a decade ago, to more than a dozen at present.
